BOOK IN BRIEF

The Book offered to a reader is dedicated to a certain valuable aspects in museum antiquity work and the share size of it is much larger that the name itself. Authors were moved by the will and the spirit for the need to formulate a logical, scientifically supported way to identify and define the running cost of the item in its initial "non-famous" stage of existence.
To a method that demonstrates the "mechanics" of the arguments in different aspects, authors give abstract examples and real use of their family collection. Thus the main theme of the book can be defined as partially forgotten but extremely useful - popular science. This is not a formal description of a small exposition, nor it is cold arguments about the antique science methodology.
This is a story about our heritage collecting problems which is supported by numerous literature quotations and rich illustrated material. The authors are experienced collectors thus know all aspects and key points in the art of "acquisition" including the most important one "evaluation". Evaluation same as acceptance of any rarity were always referred to the unpredictable phenomenon, surrounded by mystery and gamble on the will of expert-evaluators. Not without a reason many phased formulation of price of any object is shortly called "giving": I can "give" this price or I can "give" that price! That is why authors are presenting their own methods in identifying the cost of antiquity and art, looking at it as an attempt to give help and assistance to collectors and experts in the individual evaluation of different rarities. Methodology that is presented by the authors is based on a rarity evaluation scale made by gemology scientist V.V Indutniy who authors carefully analyzed, added 6 reason-based criteria and extensively modified thus making it universal. The book itself has "free planning" and divided in two parts unequal by volume to each other; 1st part includes 5 chapters and 4 tables; 2nd part consists of 13 chapters. In the 1st part a short analytical overview of collecting history and the state of the modern antique market is given as well as its outcome - a view on the need and importance to safeguard cultural and historical monuments. Authors have their own vision of how to solve this problem: thinking it is smart and intelligent - creation of an Association with certain profile theme within which borders a certificate monitoring commission whose sole purpose will be to make the life simpler for the rarities and their owners. Also here in (Chapter 5) shown the main table, the authors "know-how" giving any rarity owner a step by step process with the help of 22 analytical criteria, taking in to the account all the fine details -to define their rarities true value.
The two chapters in the part 2 are dedicated to the unavoidable "point" - items documentation. Authors are offering a universal form for registration about crucial detail information for any items, or a "Passport", and bring its possible example. Next 10 chapters of the 2nd part (3rd to 12th) tell primarily about the family museum. The reader is presented with 106 exhibits (a small part of the exposition). They come along with 230 photo illustrations, detailed characteristics and the process description of how the price was formed for each item with the help of author's methods. Each chapter is dedicated to a separate thematic direction, only a "branch" from the entire collection. In chapter 3, to the reader presented in all its beauty (as a symbol of truth and creation of art) 15 icons - 15 unique examples from different icon writing schools. Each of them comes along with analytical text: about the main specialties, Evangelic story line and the evaluation process. Choosing between equals is not an easy task, nevertheless a special attention should be given to the icon #3 "Holly Theotokos and Virgin Mary with Baby Jesus" made in Byzantine style and dated to the year 1771 leaving the highly probable possibility that it was painted by Luka Borovikovsky father of no less famous artist icon-writer V. Borovikovsky. The next chapter (#4) introduces to the reader only two exhibits from a large collection of this thematic line: silver and bronze buddy crosses, but brings out the most interesting information about them and about the history of the Orthodox cross overall. Chapter 5 - authors trademark, they aren't hiding their peculiar connection with their favorite collection item and with great pride talk about the books faith and the people connected to it, present 2 book-line rarities and 6 unique and very ancient Russian handwritings.
Chapter 6 takes the reader into an "art gallery" where before the eyes appear 13 creations each with their own unique storyline. Interesting, especially in contrast with the previous, this chapter mainly focused on the painters, that lived in the 20th century. The reader's special attention should be attracted to the works of the legendary painter Glushchenko - a soviet spy who personally knew Hitler. His paintings, one more time underline the literal motive of the entire book where each item deserves respect and excitement, for they are witnesses of human history.
Chapter 7 - a totally different in character, surprisingly homelike and nostalgic: in it the reader ends up in the comfortable company of 3 Russian samovars and 2 "work-like" piggybanks. That and the others are real exclusive items of "ancient times". Authors strongly believe that the past should not be forgotten, a whole line of national and home traditions disappear without a trace turning only into memory.
Chapter 8 accustoms the reader with different kind of emblems, over 30 exhibits are mentioned but detailed explanations of course done only for a few, a special notice should be given to the WWII battle insignia and awards of the Russian warriors. For example the year 1913 "IN MEMORY OF 22,000 RUSSIAN TROOPS KILLED IN ACTION UNDER LEIPZIG ON THE 4TH, 5TH, 6TH AND 7TH OCTOBER, 1813."
Chapter 9 presents to the reader the most real war trophies - historical monuments of the 3rd Reich. Authors know well about the negative attitude that is attributed to such collecting and they understand that the: a) reason for prohibiting a "forbidden fruit" can be only because of heightened interest to it; b) danger in the rebirth of fascism is not in collecting trophies but in the entire system of views, upbringings, economy and the way of life; c) collecting military trophies - it is not only paid respect to our history, it is respect paid to the extreme courage and heroism of the soviet soldiers.
Chapter 10 is mathematically connected to the previous maybe because it will interest, as the authors say "real men". Unable to "do the impossible" authors choose to describe only a few exhibits from the entire family "arsenal" that are thematically connected to each other: cold steel weapons, ritual weapons and firearms. This collection contains true pearls such as the exhibit #88. An awarded small sword with scabbard of battle use design, year 1789 with mark of Catherine II and engraved "FOR BRAVERY". Another honorable character should be attributed to the presented collection: a connection between certain rarities, which most likely is based on the authors vision system about all interconnected things. Chapter 11 and 12 take the reader from the fields of armor to the fields of beauty and harmony.
Chapter 11 presents a unique high skill wood craftsmanship while Chapter 12 - a beautiful in its design "Jewelry artwork" from Ukrainian masters. For this two chapters (Chapter 10, weapons) one overall comment should be made, authors on purpose bring the attention to the work of Russian ancient and modern craftsman, proving that Russian talents in their heritage artwork are without equal.
Chapter 13 is "The overall closing statement" where all conclusions are made. Authors with planning prove for the need about the described above work so that Russian rarities rightfully gain the high levels among the items of the same thematic analogy from other developed countries and that not even once any rarity will be lost without a chance of return to our ancestors. Because of that Authors are intending to continue publishing different thematic parts of their collection, and also invite the readers to visit their family museum, opening in the near future.
The book was written in live language, relationally illustrated, contains a mass of interesting facts and can be helpful to specialists just as much as to any one who wants to acquire anything interesting and spectacular.
